» Tips for Baby Shower Gifts

Write An Advice Book: Purchase a small blank journal or unfinished stuffed animal that can be written on (found in craft stores) & pass it around the shower to have everyone write a piece of advice for mom, dad, and baby, then have the writer sign his/her name next to their advice. This also works for relatives or friends who can't make it to the shower... prepare to have them sign it before you do the activity.

Name Poem with Advice: If a baby name has already been picked out, have your guests make a poem with the letters of the name. For example if the first letter is N, the tip could be "Never pull on daddy's mustache." The next letter could be E and the tip could be "Eat all your veggies!" You can then have it written in calligraphy for a nice plaque to hang in the baby's room that'll bring smiles to the parent's faces everytime they see it.

Play Dirty Diapers: Before the party take ten disposable diapers and number the outside from one to ten. Then smear the inside of each with some smelly food item (i.e. tuna, horseradish, Italian dressing, garlic, mustard) Close each diaper up. Each diaper is then passed around for the players to smell. Have the players write down their answer on paper. The one with the most correct guesses wins! Remember to get the camera out for this one - you'll have some great pictures of people holding up the smelly diapers to their nose!

Best Diaper: Purchase a cloth diaper and pins. Then blindfold two participants and have them try to diaper a baby doll or large teddy bear as neatly as they can. The trick is one guest uses only the left hand while the other uses their right hand! (The other hands are kept behind their back).

Pin the Diaper on the Baby: A variation on pin the tail on the donkey. Instead of pins, use tape, and die-cuts of diapers. Attendees try to tape them, blindfolded, on to a picture of a baby. Closest diaper to the right spot wins a prize.

Baby Expression: Create a sheet of four to six baby pictures (family albums from all the guests are the best or you can use pictures from magazines). Make photocopies or color copies of the sheet to each guest. Then have the guests try to create funny captions of what they think the baby is trying to say!

Baby Draw: Have the attendees draw a picture of a baby on a paper plate. But instead of holding the paper plate on their laps, they have to put it on their heads! The picture that best resembles a baby wins.

Make a Video To The Baby: Have everyone sometime during the party go into a seperate room and give their message and well wishes to the baby. Being sure that they mention their name and relation to the baby or parents. Then near the end of the party bring it out and show for everyone to see. (If having an all female party, the father may want this taping job so he can participate in the fun too, or put the camera on a tripod.)

Baby's Life Story: Write down titles of important or funny stages of life such as birth, first day of school, learning to drive, first date, etc. on several sheets of paper. Then divide the guests into groups and give them a stage of life to write about. Allow 10 to 15 minutes to compose the story. Have the mother-to-be read them (in order) outloud. Very funny!

Baby Pool: First get 2 months of blank calender (The month she is due and the month either before or after depending on the time of month that she is due.... if due the 20th pick the month after, if its the 2nd then the month before etc...) Then have everyone put in a dollar (or another amount) and write in the date and time that you expect the baby to arrive. Whoever is the closest wins the money!

Remembering Baby Items: Bring out a bag filled with baby items and have the attendees feel what's in it for 15 seconds. Then hide the bag and have them write down the baby items they remember. The baby shower attendee with the most correct items wins! The bag is then given to the guest of honor.

My Water Broke: The participants race to a finish line with a water filled balloon between their legs. The one who hasn't broken their water balloon wins!

Guess the Number of Jelly Beans in the Baby Bottle: Fill a baby bottle with little jelly beans (or other small candy, you can even get baby themed candy). Show the attendees the baby bottle and have them guess how many beans or candy are in the baby bottle. The one who guesses closest to the correct number wins.

Baby Shower Bag Game: Use white or brown lunch bags and spell out B A B Y S H O W E R. Then fill each bag is something for the baby that begins with that letter. For example B has bibs. Have the guests guess what's in the bag. The person with the most correct quesses wins.

Baby Quilt: Send a colorful square and puffy fabric paint along with the baby shower invitations. Tell your guests to decorate it however they would like (saving a 1/4 in seam allowance on all sides) and to bring it to the party. Then you can share why everyone decorated the way they did. Afterwards, sew the blocks together and put a backing on to make a wonderful and memorable baby blankie.

Or, instead of sending puffy fabric paint, insert the square with the invite and have them decorate with markers, glitter, or have them decide, then sew the pieces together for a small wall hanging. (You can also decide to do this at the Baby Shower.) The mother is sure to love this gift.

Decorate Baby T-Shirts: Give each attendee a plain white baby t-shirt and put a variety of puffy paint on a table. The attendees can decorate away. Since newborns go through many outfits a day, any new mom will love having many cute t-shirts!
