Week 5: The heart will begin to beat this week. It is now possible to differentiate between the head and the tail of the baby. By the end of the week that folic acid will be paying off as the neural folds begin to fuse over the baby’s spine. The baby is now called an embryo. Its average length is 1.5 - 2.5 mm.

 

Week 6: By the end of this week the baby will measure 4-6 mm. The larynx (voice box) starts to form, as well as the inner ear. The heart is developing further, and blood circulation is well established. Upper and lower limb buds will appear this week. And the beginnings of the liver, pancreas, lungs, and stomach are evident.

 

Week 7: The hand plates become present this week, and the baby is about 7-9 mm long by the end of the week. Although the genitals are forming, you can't distinguish girls from boys by sight at this point. Nasal passages are starting to form now also.

 

Week 8: Your baby will be about 8-11 mm long by the end of the week. The baby's hind brain is clearly visible. This week the baby's gonads will become either testes or ovaries. Spontaneous movement begins about now also. The toes are beginning to form. Elbows appear, and all bones and joints this week are starting to ossifiy (harden).
