Week 21: The
baby can still move all over in the amniotic fluid. Towards
the end of this trimester the baby will begin to settle in a
head down position, although some babies do not turn head down
until late in the last trimester.
The baby weighs just under a pound (13 ounces or 369 grams).
Week 22: This
week the baby has developed eyebrows, and its hair is thicker
and has color. It weighs about 15 ounces (425 grams) and is
27.5 cm or 10.8 inches in total length.
Week 23: The baby's fingernails
are almost fully formed. The baby is unaffected by the Braxton
Hicks contractions. Meconium, the baby's first bowel movement,
is developing. Baby weighs 1 pound 2 ounces (510 grams).
Week 24: The baby is almost
completely formed now and is beginning to deposit fat on its
body. The purpose of this fat is to retain body heat. Newborns
are unable to regulate their body temperature at first. This
is particularly a problem for a premature baby. The baby weighs
1 pound 5 ounces (595 grams) and is 30 cm or 11.8 inches in
total length.
